Overview of the application landscape
Insight into all applications, integrations, and data flows. Redundant functionality and outdated integrations are identifiable and can be addressed.
From implicit knowledge to a governable information architecture

Hunze and Aa’s Water Authority has a data and information team of approximately 28 employees. The architecture was in place, as was the knowledge. However, both primarily resided in the minds of a small number of staff members. This creates a risk that many public sector organisations recognise: once someone leaves, their knowledge leaves with them.
Decisions were made based on assumptions rather than shared understanding. The application landscape grew increasingly opaque, integrations were added without a clear overview of what already existed. And the conversation with the organisation about information provision became increasingly difficult to maintain.
The challenge was: how do we make what is in our heads visible and usable for the organisation?"
Richard Smilda | Head of Data & Information Team
“We have architecture, but we are not yet using it optimally.”
“Knowledge resides in people’s heads, not in systems.”
“We lack overview of our application landscape.”
ArchiXL, together with Hunze and Aa’s Water Authority, started from information architecture without a large upfront design or a theoretical framework as the end goal. The setup was developed iteratively, based on current organisational challenges.
ArchiMedes™ and WikiXL™ form the technical foundation of a central knowledge platform. Architecture models, concepts, and documentation are brought together in one place, ensuring that employees are no longer dependent on the right person to find the right answer. The translation from architectural reality into management information and governable communication was a deliberate choice in the collaboration.
A reliable knowledge partner that thinks along on the full information challenge."

Insight into all applications, integrations, and data flows. Redundant functionality and outdated integrations are identifiable and can be addressed.
Priorities are set based on factual insight. No more assumptions as the basis for decisions that must be accountable to the executive board.
Multiple employees work from the same information base. The departure of a colleague no longer means the loss of knowledge.
Complex architecture is translated into understandable visuals and business-oriented language. The conversation with the organisation has become more substantive.
In core processes such as permitting, enforcement, inspections, and supervision, required data is structured, recorded, and reused. The alignment between processes and systems has become more concrete.
kennis.hunzeenaas.nl makes concepts, domains, and symbols searchable for the entire organisation. Built on WikiXL™, with a linked data foundation enabling reuse in other systems.
In April 2026, Hunze and Aa’s Water Authority started migrating its architecture to ArchiMedes™. This brings the architecture models into the same platform as the knowledge base, enabling fully integrated management of architecture, concepts, and documentation from a single central environment.
This marks the next step in the ambition to realise a single coherent knowledge platform serving the entire organisation, from architect to primary process.
“For me, ArchiXL is not a supplier, but a full-fledged knowledge partner that connects architecture with the practice of the water authority.”
Richard Smilda | Teamhoofd Data & Informatie
ArchiXL helps government and semi-government organisations gain control over their information provision. Through ArchiMedes™, WikiXL™, and BegrippenXL™, architecture becomes accessible, knowledge is shared, and complexity is translated into understandable insight. Not as a theoretical model, but as a practically working foundation for better decision-making.
