New whitepaper: Agentic AI as the next step in Enterprise Architecture

ArchiXL publishes a new whitepaper about the use of Agentic AI for Enterprise Architecture

ArchiXL has published a new whitepaper on the role of Agentic AI in enterprise architecture. While traditional digitalization focused on unlocking data, the focus is now shifting toward mobilizing knowledge: interpreting, combining, and applying information in decision-making.

The whitepaper, written by colleague Jan Willem van Veen, positions Agentic AI not as a technology challenge, but as an architectural one. AI agents are capable of autonomous reasoning, consulting sources, and initiating actions, but require a solid foundation to remain reliable and controllable. Three pillars are central: semantic precision, trustworthy knowledge sources, and explicit governance.

From an architectural perspective, the whitepaper introduces a new layer in the landscape: the cognition plane. In addition to the well-known data and control planes, this layer focuses on governing and accounting for reasoning and decision-making by AI agents. This requires new design principles and a rethinking of governance.

The publication also describes how organizations can evolve from simple AI applications to a federation of collaborating agents, both within and across organizational boundaries. Conceptual models, knowledge management, and architecture governance play a crucial role in this evolution.

The whitepaper provides concrete guidance for architects, including a five-step implementation approach and a positioning of tooling such as BegrippenXL, WikiXL, and ArchiMedes within this new paradigm.

For organizations looking to leverage AI as an extension of their architecture, this whitepaper offers a clear and practical framework.
